As the Technical Director for the “Country Squire” music video by Tyler Childers, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a talented animation team and work on various shots. My responsibilities included overseeing crucial elements such as lighting, rendering, texturing, and simulated FX, as well as assuming TD responsibilities to identify and resolve pipeline issues, make informed technical decisions, and troubleshoot any technical difficulties that arose during production.
I created a number of simulated FX throughout the course of the production, utlizing various simulation techniques and solvers inside Side FX Houdini. To create the spit and droplet effects I used a combination of FLIP fluids and POP simulations, vellum grains and cloth for the exploding snowman effect and finally, utlised hair simulated advected by pyro to generate the ‘cotton’ gunshot effect, which was designed to complement the stop-motion style of the visuals we were striving to create.
While it’s not feasible to provide an exhaustive breakdown of my contributions to the project, I’m pleased to share some of my personal highlights from the music video, which encompassed a wide range of responsibilities, from texturing to FX. The accompanying captions accurately reflect my role in each of these favorite shots.
